Dear Costume Goddess,

Would it be terribly offensive if I made a costume that reflects the subculture in my part of the world, namely the punk/Goth look? I have never been able to pull off the *lady* look and I am short and slim with short spikey hair. If I do put together a punk-look costume, what are the "rules", so to speak? what items are required to have a full costume and how far can I interpret them my own way? ---Bellydance Goes Punk

Punk, I don't see any problem with being a spiky-haired Goth-punk bellydancer, just do it well. The purists and conservatives in the audience might be offended, but others will admire your originality. I am all for creative, interpretive bellydance costume, if it follows these standards:

  • Not body-revealing or provocative to the point of exhibitionism, or deliberately trashy.
  • Flattering to your particular face and figure. Display unconventional beauty, not ugliness.
  • Carefully constructed. An artistically ripped fishnet sleeve, for instance, is fine, but not fraying seams, messy stitching, visible panty lines, and other things that just look sloppy.
  • Enhances your snaky dance movements with theatrical details such as light-reflecting or hanging ornaments, tassels, or fringe somewhere on the costume.
