Snake Hips

Here are some great reviews from Amazon.com
This is a new book... well written!

Reviewer: A reader from Richmond, VA USA
...and there aren't that many of them that are also well written. Snake Hips is not really so much about belly dancing as it is the author's story about making peace with who she is. I enjoyed her story, her wit and her writing ability. What a treat!

Makes a great gift, October 2, 2002

I myself haven't had a chance to read Snake Hips, but I gave it as a gift to two people, one of which is a Belly Dance instructor. Both of them raved about the book, how funny it was, and how much they wanted it not to end. So based on their high praise I would recommend it.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

After being dumped by her loser boyfriend, Soffee, a "sober, nerdy, rock 'n' rolling, coffee-drinking, school-teaching, erotica-reading, kitsch-loving Lebanese American" moves back home to Richmond, Va., to wallow in self-pity. There, she comes across a flier advertising the usual classes in yoga, vegetarian cooking, ballroom dancing and... belly dancing. Her girlfriends think she's lost her mind, but Soffee knows she's found the perfect distraction. Not only does belly dancing have nothing to do with her ex, it's a fine way to reconnect with her Lebanese roots. Plus, "it is a relief to be part of a subculture where younger and thinner do not automatically equal better." Soffee learns to roll her hips, shimmy and make her stomach poof out; spends wild amounts of money on the tackiest costumes imaginable; and most satisfying discovers the ultimate cool of "belly dancer bonding." Her ethnic high leads to marital fantasies, e.g., being "third-favorite wife" to a young sheik she's cyber-dating, although she admits "being obedient is easy on-line." She also has flings with an insufferable Iraqi yuppie and a born-again Lebanese boy-next-door all hilarious disasters. Soffee's women friends keep her from feeling too lousy ("[t]he good thing about girlfriends is they usually hate your exes before you do") until Mr. Right catches her by surprise. While there is a lot of information on the belly dancing culture, this is not a how-to book, although an appendix lists resources for the interested. What Soffee's really offering is a guide to mending a broken heart: embrace a totally distracting activity, bond with your girlfriends and don't forget to laugh. Belly Dance Videos

Excellent Basic Instruction for beginner bellydancers

  • Bellydance: Magical Motion By Dawn Devine Brown. Taught by Atéa. Bellydance! Magical Motion is a well-balanced introduction to this ancient and alluring art form. What makes this video different is that it adds a new dimension by emphasizing the exercise potential of the dance every bit as much as the artistry.

  • Bellydance! Slow Moves"> Atea demonstrates and explains some belly dance moves including hip movements, belly rolls, and head slides. You can see her entire body, which helps when you are learning these moves yourself. Also there are four individual dance performances and a group dance, which is interesting and good for ideas. Regardless of whether you like her personal style of dancing, this video will get you through the first few months of stuggling with the basic moves if you use it several times a week as a supplement to regular classes. Those looking for an easy dance tape to help ease back pain and stiffness will also find it valuable.

  • Dolphina Workout Join Dolphina to get a total body workout and feel like a Goddess! Beautifully filmed in a Goddess Temple with an intoxicating soundtrack, The Goddess Workout is gorgeous to watch, easy to follow, and will get you in the best shape of your life. I agree that the upper body shots can make some of the moves confusing leaving you guessing what you're supposed to be doing.....but this only happens 2 or three times. If you're looking for fun in your workout and an encouraging positive self image then I highly recommend this video!
  • Belly Dance Fast Moves Taught by Atéa. Great for the absolute beginner . Many people want to take up belly dancing and do not live anywhere near a professional teacher. Atea will get you through the basics and, because she is so thin and wears the types of costumes that she does, you can see her every move - just what a beginning student needs. She speaks slowly and clearly. I have little use for instructional tapes where the instructor is all "dressed up" making the student guess at what their legs and body are doing. Performance tapes are not good instructional tapes for beginners. If you have never danced or had a lesson before and what to learn the basics - start here.

Instruction for Beginner-Intermediate Belly Dancers

  • Ancient Art Of Oriental Belly Dance, Volume 1. Edited by Tazz Richards Taught by Alexandra King. Alexandra King does have some interesting moves to teach. She is very good at explaining just how something is done. Some of the moves are geared towards absolute beginners, and some towards intermediate level dancers. In either case, Alexandria breaks down the moves, demonstrating them slowly before picking up to a faster beat.

  • Oriental Belly Dance.Good beginner belly dance video.

  • Bellydancing : The Sensuous Workout with Shamira (2000) This is a very good basic instructional tape, for an beginner or beginner/intermediate level dancer who has a grasp in basic bellydace movements. Shamira emphasizes on the basic dance elements such as hip work and steps and spends more time reviewing the fundamentals with the audience. This video always shows her whole body while she dances so you can see the movement she does.

  • Egyptian Belly Dancing for Intermediates with Hilary Thacker This video is a very good next step for those who have already mastered the moves of the beginners video or who have had a bit of experience of belly dancing. The instructions in this video are very well explained. The atmospheric setting and music is very inspiring. The section on the stick very interesting and something which I'm keen to try out just as soon as I can get my hands on one. I would recommend this video to anyone with experience of the basics. This is a great way to build on the basics of belly dancing and take your dancing to a new level.

  • Belly Dancing I: Beginning Instruction with Mara This is a very shory video but good instruction for very basic movements. The good thing about this video (and its follow up… Belly Dacing with Mara II) is that Mara really teaches you how to put the moves to music in this beautiful free-form dance style. In the dance sequences performed after each step may be very helpful in giving you ideas on how to tie all your belly dance. moves together

  • Belly Dancing II: Intermediate Instruction with Mara This video follows the format established in Belly Dancing I: Beginning Instruction,. This video also presents 12 moves in 3 groups of 4 moves each. Each section is followed by a dance segment where Mara puts the movements you just learned to music.

Women/ Ancient Civilizations

  • The Sumerians: Their History Culture and character by Samuel Noah KramerThis book is a very in-depth study of ancient Sumer. There is a great focus on the actual writings of the Sumerians themselves. The author, S.N. Kramer has chapters on history, society, religion, literature, education, and character of Sumerians.

  • History Begins at Sumer: Thirty-Nine 'Firsts' Sumerians had in Recorded History Basically this book sets out to explain and describe, using extensive quotations from Sumerian Literature, what Kramer took to be the thirty-nine civilizational firsts of the Sumerians. Many new archaeological discoveries have been made since the 3rd revised edition of 'History Begins at Sumer' was published in 1981, and current thinking seems to be leaning towards the view that, far from beginning in Sumer, civilization first arose further East in India.

  • Dictionary of the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania(Volume B This is an excellent book on Sumer!! I would say agreeing with many others that this book has some of the most interesting sample usages of correct Sumerian ever seen. The author is a very well known Sumerian scholar. This should be on every Sumerian scholar's bookshelf. It probably is.
